How's My Driving?
Physical Fitness
Diminished strength, coordination and flexibility can impact
your ability to safely control your car. Regular exercise
can improve your mental and physical health, as well as
strengthen your nervous system and reflexes. Do you have
any of these symptoms of decreased physical fitness?
- Trouble looking over your shoulder when changing lanes,
or trouble looking left and right to check traffic at
intersections?
- Trouble moving your foot from the gas to the brake pedal,
or turning the steering wheel?
- Inability to raise your arms above your shoulders?
- Walk less than one block per day?
Tips For Staying Safe Behind the Wheel
- With your doctors
approval, learn some simple stretching exercises and start
a walking program.
- Get examined by a doctor
if you have pain or swelling in your feet. If you have
pain or stiffness in your arms, legs or neck your doctor
may be able to prescribe physical therapy and/or medication.
- See an Occupational Therapist or Certified Driving Rehabilitation
Specialist who may be able to prescribe special equipment
to make it easier to steer your car and operate the foot
pedals.
