Oregon's Safe Mobility Initiative

Purpose

This plan is presented as a proposal to Driver and Motor Vehicle Services from the At Risk Driver Public Education Consortium. Plan implementation is contingent upon the availability of resources. The goals are to:

  • Increase awareness about the risks to public safety from drivers with visual, functional or cognitive impairment and to encourage drivers’ self-assessment for declining driving ability;
  • Provide information about resources for family members and caregivers of individuals who should be giving up driving;
  • Address the information needs of physicians and other professionals, agencies and organizations that are charged with providing assessment or assistance to drivers and their families;
  • Promote the use of driver improvement classes and alternative methods of transportation; and
  • Encourage state and regional planning and coordination to address the safe mobility of all individuals through greater use of technology, engineering and public transportation.
