Oregon's Safe Mobility Initiative

Shifting Gears in Later Years is a statewide campaign to increase awareness about Oregon’s comprehensive policy for licensing mature drivers. It begins with awareness of one’s driving abilities, and planning for the time that it may not be safe to drive anymore. When safety becomes an issue, family, friends or a medical professional may intervene.

Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division (DMV) is proud to have provided the leadership and guidance to launch Oregon’s Safe Mobility Initiative. Its continuation will depend on involvement from a wide variety of stakeholders: public and alternative transportation, social service agencies, and providers of direct service. Recognizing that transportation is essential to quality of life, addressing the issue of licensing the mature driver will require commitment from both public and private agencies.
