Public Transit Options

If public transit service is the most appropriate option for you, the following definitions may help you arrange for the type of ride that fits your particular needs. ODOT’s Public Transit Directory can help you locate public transit services in your Oregon county.

Fixed Route: Regularly scheduled, fixed route transit bus service is available in many communities. Fixed route services transport riders along an established route with designated stops where riders can board or be dropped off. Payment of a fare on a per ride basis is usually required although most communities offer discounts to senior citizens. Most services offer specialized training and information to assist people who are new to riding fixed route buses. Fixed route buses are usually wheelchair accessible, and many have a "kneeling" feature that lowers the height of the front entrance step.

Dial-A-Ride: Dial-A-Ride services are also available in many communities. Service levels vary between communities, and some require certification that the rider is eligible to use these specialized services. Dial-A-Ride service vehicles may be sedans, vans or buses.

Dial-A-Ride service is also known as "demand responsive" service due to the need to make advance arrangements for a ride. The rider must call in and request a ride. The Dial-A-Ride driver will arrange to pick you up within a designated timeframe, and additional passengers additional passengers may be picked up while in transport to your destination. The return trip is usually scheduled in advance, although some services will allow you to call when you need to be picked up.
